Developing Human-Machine Interfaces to Support Monitoring of UAV Automation

چکیده
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are rapidly becoming an integral part of contemporary military operations. In light of developments in UAV flight and payload technologies, the role of UAV operators is evolving into that of supervisory controller of complex automated system. However, it is well established that human operators perform poorly in this role. A growing body of literature points to the crucial role that trust in automation plays in determining the efficacy of human monitoring of automated systems. A recent compilation of research on trust in automation suggest that providing operators with information related to automation process and contextspecific automation reliability is essential in promoting appropriate trust in automation. This report presents a research plan to create innovative design concepts for cognitive artifacts that communicate these two types of information to UAV operators for the purpose of engendering appropriate trust in automated systems. It includes a categorization of the emerging automation technologies in UAV systems, an analysis of the changing tasks of UAV crews, and a selective review of relevant human-automation research. The report then introduces two human-machine interface concepts for selected types of UAV automation and proposes a research plan for testing and evaluating these design concepts.

Error assessment in man-machine systems using the CREAM method and human-in-the-loop fault tree analysis
Background and Objectives: Despite contribution to catastrophic accidents, human errors have been generally ignored in the design of human-machine (HM) systems and the determination of the level of automation (LOA). This paper aims to develop a method to estimate the level of automation in the early stage of the design phase considering both human and machine performance. Methods: A quantita...

Abstract: Knowing the tree species combination of forests provides valuable information for studying the forest’s economic value, fire risk assessment, biodiversity monitoring, and wildlife habitat improvement. Fieldwork is often time-consuming and labor-required, free satellite data are available in coarse resolution and the use of manned aircraft is relatively costly. Recently, unmanned aeria...

In this document, we outline a class of problems that we believe is general enough to encapsulate many of the current problems of interest in Air Traffic Management, UAV design, and Command and Control interfaces for human-controlled and autonomous aircraft. In order to address these problems, we propose an input-output view aimed at establishing the robust performance of automation systems to ...
متن کاملUrban Flood Mapping Based on Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Remote Sensing and Random Forest Classifier—A Case of Yuyao, China
Flooding is a severe natural hazard, which poses a great threat to human life and property, especially in densely-populated urban areas. As one of the fastest developing fields in remote sensing applications, an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) can provide high-resolution data with a great potential for fast and accurate detection of inundated areas under complex urban landscapes. In this research...
متن کاملThe Playbook Approach to Adaptive Automation
SIFT has pioneered a human-automation integration architecture, called Playbook, based on a shared model of the tasks in the domain. This shared task model provides a means of human-automation communication about plans, goals, methods and resource usage—a process akin to referencing plays in a sports team’s playbook. The Playbook enables human operators to interact with subordinate systems with...
